Sloppy Joe recipes may have been one of your favorites as a kid, but sometimes, as an adult, we have to take better care of what we eat. That doesn't mean we want to sacrifice the same great taste--or the warm and fuzzy memories that come along with it. The flavors in our Topless Sloppy Joe recipe will transport you to yesteryear. Just one bite, and you'll feel like a youngster in grandma's kitchen again!

What You'll Need

  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 stalk celery, chopped
  • 1 pound ground turkey breast
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 (15-ounce) can no salt added tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 whole wheat hamburger buns, split

What to Do

  1. In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, heat oil until hot: cook onion, green pepper, and celery 5 minutes or until tender.
  2. Add ground turkey and garlic powder. Saute 5 minutes, or until turkey is no longer pink, stirring occasionally.
  3. Mix in remaining ingredients, except buns, and cook over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes or until sauce thickens and is heated through.
  4. Spoon mixture over bun halves, and enjoy a topless, or as some folks say, an open-faced delight.
